Video Script Writer
Most YouTube scripts are either rambling outlines that fall apart on camera or stiff essays that sound robotic when spoken. The Video Script Writer produces 10-20 minute scripts engineered for retention — pattern interrupts every 90-120 seconds, hooks that earn the next sentence, structure that survives the click-away point.
What this skill does
A YouTube script lives or dies on retention architecture, not on prose. The algorithm tracks where people leave; sponsors and growth follow watch-time; and watch-time is built sentence by sentence. This skill writes scripts that earn every minute of the next minute — the hook stops the click-away in the first eight seconds, the setup establishes credibility without resume-reading, the core content is sectioned into 2-4 minute blocks each following Claim → Evidence → Example → Transition, and the payoff calls back to the hook so the viewer feels the loop close.
Pattern interrupts are marked in the script every 90-120 seconds, not added in post. Seven types — visual cut, tonal shift, micro-story, direct address, proof drop, aside, counter-argument — each picked for where it fits. A 15-minute script gets 8-10 interrupts minimum. The script also includes a re-hook at the midpoint ("now here's where it gets interesting") and breadcrumbs to keep the most-engaged viewers committed through the slower sections ("the third one is the one that changed everything for me — but first...").
It's written for the mouth, not the page. Contractions always. Sentences under 15 words. Conversational connectors. Stage directions in brackets — [pause], [lean in], [emphasis on THIS word]. No academic phrasing. No "as I mentioned earlier" because that makes viewers feel they missed something. Words-to-time conversion is built in at 150 wpm — a 10-minute script lands around 1,500 words, a 15-minute script around 2,250 — so the script doesn't over-pad to hit a length target. Padding kills retention; short videos with high retention outperform long videos with mid retention.
Hybrid mode is supported. If you prefer to ad-lib the core teaching, you get fully scripted hooks, transitions, and payoffs with bullet points for the section bodies — pattern interrupts still marked in both. The skill will also push back on multi-topic scripts; if you want three ideas in one video, you'll be told why splitting performs better, and if you insist, the result is structured as discrete "3 things" sections with the retention risk noted. You also get a retention map, B-roll notes by timestamp, and two title options plus a thumbnail concept so the metadata work isn't left to chance.
When this triggers
- ·You have a long-form video idea and need it written end-to-end, not bullet-outlined
- ·Your last few videos lost half the audience by minute three and the retention graph is brutal
- ·You want a hybrid — scripted hooks and transitions, bullets for the core content
- ·You're scripting a 15-minute video and don't know where to put pattern interrupts
- ·You keep trying to cram two topics into one script and the result feels unfocused
Example
Trigger
User: '12-minute YouTube video, audience: B2B founders, topic: why most cold outreach fails. Tone: direct, slightly contrarian.'
Output
Target: ~1,800 words at 150 wpm. HOOK (0:00-0:30) "Most cold outreach advice is written by people who haven't sent a cold email since 2019. The playbooks don't work anymore, and I can prove it with the open rate on the last 8,000 emails I sent." [PATTERN INTERRUPT: visual — show inbox screenshot] SETUP (0:30-2:00) [credibility line, problem in viewer's terms, 3-part roadmap, [PATTERN INTERRUPT: direct address]] SECTION 1: The personalisation lie (2:00-5:00) [Claim → Evidence → Example → Transition] [PATTERN INTERRUPT: counter-argument] SECTION 2-3, PAYOFF at 85%, CTA + close. + retention map, B-roll notes, 2 title options, thumbnail concept.
