Thank You Referral Asker

Most thank-you emails miss the moment to ask, and most referral asks feel like the thank-you was a setup. The Thank You / Referral Asker writes the version that does both — genuine gratitude, natural ask, a forwardable blurb so the client doesn't have to think.

What this skill does

Two ways people get this wrong. The thank-you is genuine but never includes an ask, so every word-of-mouth opportunity quietly closes. Or the thank-you is so clearly a setup for the referral ask that the gratitude reads as performative and the client feels used. The Thank You / Referral Asker threads the needle: genuine gratitude, natural transition, specific ask, and a pressure-release line that means it.

Timing is half the skill. The ask works when the client is at peak satisfaction — they just saw results, just received the deliverable, just praised the work spontaneously. The ask fails when the project is still in flight or there's an open complaint. If the project had a rough middle and a good end, the skill waits 2-4 weeks and leads with a pure thank-you that acknowledges the journey rather than papering over it. If they respond warmly, the referral ask can come later. If they don't, the relationship hasn't been damaged by a tone-deaf request.

The ask itself is calibrated to be specific enough to trigger a mental rolodex search. "If you know anyone who could use my services" is too broad and gets ignored. "If you know any SaaS founders going through a rebrand" is specific enough that the client can actually think of two names. The output includes a forwardable blurb written in third person — the client copy-pastes it into a forwarded email and the introduction takes 30 seconds instead of 10 minutes of drafting. Friction removed is referrals earned.

Testimonial requests get their own template because most people freeze when asked to "write a testimonial" — the request opens onto a blank page. The skill provides three short prompts ("what was the situation before we started, what stood out about working together, what results have you seen") so the client can answer one, two, or all three and you have usable copy. And the anti-patterns are enforced: never ask for a referral and a testimonial in the same email (sequence them, testimonial first), never attach a financial referral incentive for professional services, and never ask for any of this when you haven't delivered results yet. The audacity costs more than the silence would.

  • ·The project had bumps but ended well, and you want to thank them without overplaying it

Subject: those launch numbers Hi [name], Just saw the week-one numbers — 340 signups at 12% conversion is well past where we were aiming. Genuinely a pleasure working with a team that pushes back on the brief instead of rubber-stamping it. Honest aside: the best projects I land usually come from people like you. If any other SaaS founders going through a rebrand come to mind, I'd love an intro — happy to send you a forwardable blurb to make it a 10-second job. No pressure at all — grateful for what we've already built together regardless. [Sign-off] Forwardable blurb: "[Name] runs SaaS rebrands that ship — they just took us from [old position] to [new position] and our launch hit [result].
