Upsell & Expansion Email

Most upsell emails read 'we also offer X — want to buy it?' and get deleted. The Upsell & Expansion Email writes the version that leads with the client's win, bridges to an opportunity they actually care about, and positions the next service as the obvious next step — not a hard sell.

What this skill does

Upselling fails when it's seller-focused. "Here's another thing we sell" reads as "we want more of your money." Upselling works when it starts from a result the client already cares about, names a specific bottleneck that the next service would unblock, and frames the recommendation as part of doing the work well rather than as a separate sale. The skill enforces that structure: open with their win, bridge to an unrealised opportunity, suggest the expansion with a specific expected outcome, close with low pressure.

Five angles, each matched to a different situation. Next Step when results have been delivered and the logical extension is obvious. I Noticed when you've spotted an opportunity the client hasn't raised. Other Clients when you have social proof from similar accounts. Efficiency when consolidating reduces their coordination overhead. Risk Mitigation when not expanding creates a visible exposure. The skill picks the right angle based on what the user describes and writes around it rather than defaulting to a generic "have you considered our other services."

Every email comes with three things: the primary version, a softer alternative for newer or more cautious relationships, and a graceful not-now response. The softer alternative isn't a weaker email — it's calibrated for relationship strength, and the user knows their client better than the skill does. The not-now response matters as much as the ask, because how you handle a polite no determines whether they come back later or quietly move on. Never make a client feel guilty for declining.

It refuses a few things. Won't pitch expansion when results have been mediocre — earn the right first. Won't pitch into unresolved complaints — fix the current engagement before suggesting more. Won't shotgun multiple offers in one email, because two pitches reads as "we want more money" instead of "here's a smart next move." Won't sell the feature when the outcome is what matters: "we also do SEO" is a feature, "we can grow traffic to the pages we just optimised" is an outcome. The principle the skill is built on: upselling is a service when the expansion genuinely helps, and a betrayal when it doesn't.

User: 'Client just finished a landing-page project — conversion up 23%. I also offer SEO. Want to pitch a 6-month SEO retainer.'

Output

Angle: Next Step (results delivered, logical extension). Outcome to lead with: 23% conversion lift wasted if traffic doesn't grow to match. Subject: "Your conversion lift + a thought" "[Name], the new pages landed well — 23% conversion lift in six weeks. Question that's been bugging me: you're converting better, but traffic to those pages hasn't changed. The bottleneck has moved from page quality to traffic volume — which is the exact problem the SEO retainer would address. Rough shape: 6 months, focus on the three highest-intent pages we just optimised, target [specific traffic outcome]. Worth a 20-minute call to scope it? No pressure if the timing's off — happy to revisit later in the year." Softer alternative (newer relationships): drop the scope proposal, replace with "worth a conversation in the new year?" Keeps the door open without the pitch. Not-now response: "Totally — let's pick it up after [next natural moment]. I'll put a note in for then."
